Mongolian Beef Recipe

There's a cute little chinese restaurant not too far from our house that my hubby and I love.  Everytime we eat there we get Mongolian Beef.  Oh, I also get the cream cheese wontons.  And I don't share them - at all.  Some things are sacred.  The price for this tasty meal is $11.95.  The recipe is not all that involved so I knew that I could make it at home.  And I did.

 Mongolian Beef

Ingredients:
1 -2 lbs of flank steak thinly sliced
1/2 cup Soy Sauce
1 Tbs granulated sugar
1 Tbs Sesame Seed Oil
1 Tbs garlic powder
1 tsp minced ginger root
1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 Tbs vegetable oil
1 large sweet onion chopped (Vidalia Onions are my fave)
2 stalks of green onion chopped (or more if you like)

Directions:
  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium high heat.  Add the onion and green onion and cook for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the steak to the skillet with the onions and cook until no longer pink.
  3. Mix together the soy sauce, sugar, sesame seed oil, cayenne pepper, ginger root and garlic powder together in a bowl.
  4. Add soy sauce mixture to the steak in the skillet.  Simmer for about 5 - 10 minutes.
  5. Serve over rice.
Note:  I like my food to have a little bite back so I added the cayenne pepper for a little kick.  If you don't like spicy you can leave it out. Also, I'm sure some of the ingredients might not be of "mongolian" tradition, but I just used what I had in my pantry which is the name of the game when you're living frugally.  Luckily, it turned out great for me.  If you try it let me know how it worked for you.
