There's a little Japanese Restaurant nearby that I like to go to. One of my favorite dishes that they serve is Beef & Broccoli. Sometimes I just have a craving for it. This dish that I love costs $9.95.
When I saw THIS recipe on Pinterest I thought I would give it a try. I did make a couple of minor changes by adding crushed red pepper and sliced onions. I like my food with a little kick and my hubby loves onions.
I LOVE my Crock Pot. I got it on clearance for only $15!
- Mix the 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with a couple tablespoons of the cooked sauce and add it back to the Crock Pot.
- Add in the broccoli (and onions if you like)
- Cook on HIGH for another 30-40 minutes - this makes the sauce thicken
- Serve over cooked rice.
I was really impressed and it tasted JUST like my favorite dish!
Now, how much money does this homemade version save me?
Let's do the math.
Boneless Beef Chuck Roast - $7.47
Beef Broth - $1.89 for the container and I used about 1/4 of it = $.47
Soy Sauce - Paid $.23 and used 1/2 of the bottle = $.12
Garlic - paid $1 for the bottle of minced garlic and used about 1/5 of it = $.20
Brown Sugar - paid $.50 for a 1 lb box and used less than 1/5 of it = $.10
Onion - paid $.56 for one and I used only half of it = $.28
Crushed Red Pepper - Paid $1 for the bottle and used maybe 1/10 of it = $.10
Broccoli - paid $.96 for one crown
Corn Starch - it was free after coupons = $0.00
Rice - it was free after coupons = $0.00
Grand Total: $9.70
Our whole family of 5 ate this and still had leftovers for two lunches the next day - 7 servings.
Making this $1.39 a serving
versus the $9.95 a serving at the restaurant.
That sure beats what I would pay eating out!

- Place the beef in a Crock Pot and cover it with the mixture.
- Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours
(I let mine cook for the whole 8 hours - it makes the meat super tender)
