Amy - do the math on this. Most coffee shops have punch cards where, after 10 or 12 punches, you get a free drink. With StarBucks you have to accumulate 15 gold stars.
ReplyDeletePlus other coffee shops you can pay cash and get your card punched. StarBucks is only going to give you a gold star IF you pay with the StarBucks card itself. That means you have to advance StarBucks money to load the card so that you can get a gold star when you later buy your latte using that card. No other coffee shop I have been at requires that I give them money in advance or they won't punch my card.
Finally, if I buy 5 lattes at my local coffee shop I get 5 punches on my card. StarBucks gives you 1 gold star regardless of how many drinks you bought.
So this 'reward' requires you loan StarBucks money, have to buy more coffees than other vendors in order to get a free one, and also only gives you one reward point regardless of how much you purchase at one time.
Yes, Lesley, you are right. Other coffee shops are less expensive and have better rewards programs. However, the reason Starbucks is so popular is because their coffee is good and a lot of people prefer to drink it. What might not seem like a good deal to you might seem like a great deal to the person who grabs Starbucks everyday regardless and until now didn't get rewarded. One of my readers gets a $100 Starbucks gift card every year for Christmas and I'm sure she would appreciate this program.
