I know that all kiddos love sodas. I limit the amount of soda that I give my kiddos for many reasons. First off is the caffeine. Caffeine and my kids do not mix - at all. There's also the price comparison. For a 2 Liter of name brand soda you can pay anywhere from $1 on sale to $2 or even more. Kool-Aid packs cost $.20 each at my local Wally World and make 2 quarts (1.89 L.) I paid $1.59 for the Domino Sugar 4 lb. last week at Walgreens. It was on sale for $1.99 (with Walgreens coupon) and I had a $.40 off coupon.
Now, some aggravating math:
There's approximately 9 1/3 cups of sugar in a 4 lb bag of Domino Sugar. I use only 3/4 cup of sugar in my Kool-Aid. (My kids love it just the same and don't seem to miss the extra 1/4 cup.) Math shows me I get approximately 12, 2 quart containers off of one 4 lb. bag of sugar.
$1.59/12 = $.13 each 2 quart
The average cost of a 2 Liter bottle of regular soda is around $1.50. The cost of making 2 liters of Kool-Aid would be around $.33 ($.20 pack of Kool-Aid plus $.13 for the sugar.)
Assume that your kiddos are like mine and go through 2 quarts (1.89 L) of Kool-Aid in 2 days or 183 a year.
$.33 x 183 = $60.39 for Kool-Aid
(If I convert the Liters to quarts it changes the 183 times to 173 times a year)
$1.50 x 173 = $259.50
(If I convert the Liters to quarts it changes the 183 times to 173 times a year)
$1.50 x 173 = $259.50
That's a savings of $199.11 a year! Now imagine if we drank only water.
Good luck getting your kids to do that, though.
